According to officials, India consumes about 31.3 million tonnes of LPG annually, with around 87% used by households and the remaining by commercial establishments such as hotels, restaurants, and catering services. Because household usage accounts for the majority, the government has decided to prioritize domestic consumers in the distribution process.
As part of emergency measures, a 24×7 control room has reportedly been set up with officers from the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry and other departments to track supplies and address disruptions.
Officials have also appealed to citizens not to panic, stating that domestic LPG cylinders are still being delivered within roughly two to three days of booking in most regions.
Middle East Conflict Disrupts Supply Chain
One of the major reasons behind the anxiety over LPG supply is the ongoing geopolitical tension in the Middle East. India imports a significant portion of its LPG from countries in West Asia, and much of this supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route.

Induction Cooktops Go Out of Stock

Retailers and e-commerce platforms have reported that induction cooktops are rapidly going out of stock in several major cities. A check across platforms such as Amazon, Flipkart, and quick-commerce apps showed many models listed as unavailable due to overwhelming demand.
Data from e-commerce platforms suggests that sales of induction cooktops have tripled in just a few days, while some platforms reported a 20-fold increase in orders as households rushed to secure alternatives to LPG cooking.
Electronics retailers and appliance manufacturers have also confirmed a sharp spike in purchases, with some stores selling dozens of units in a single day.
Impact on Restaurants and Commercial Establishments
While households are being prioritized, commercial users are facing greater challenges. Hotels, restaurants, and street food vendors depend heavily on commercial LPG cylinders for daily operations.
In several cities, eateries have reported difficulty obtaining refills. Some restaurants have been forced to reduce menu options or temporarily shut down due to the lack of cooking gas.
In extreme cases, shortages have led to black marketing of cylinders, with prices reportedly rising well above the official rate. Small food businesses and roadside vendors are among the hardest hit because they operate on tight margins and cannot afford inflated costs.
As a temporary solution, some establishments are turning to electric stoves, microwaves, and even firewood to continue operations.
Government Assurances and Measures
Despite the concerns, government officials have emphasized that there is no nationwide shortage of domestic LPG cylinders. Authorities say the current issue is mainly linked to commercial supply disruptions and logistical challenges.
To stabilise the situation, the government has reportedly increased LPG production and strengthened monitoring of distribution channels. Measures are also being taken to prevent hoarding and ensure fair allocation of cylinders.
Officials have repeatedly urged the public not to panic and avoid unnecessary stockpiling, which can worsen supply disruptions.
